PROCIG AND MITCH CLEARINGHOUSE PROJECT
PROCIG
PROCIG and the Mitch Clearinghouse Project have joined forces to promote National Spatial Data Infrastructures (NSDI).
USGS Hurricane Mitch Program
Central America was devastated by Hurricane Mitch, a Category 5 hurricane. It was one of the most destructive hurricanes in the recorded history of the western hemisphere.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS), along with other Federal and International agencies, led an immediate and targeted response effort providing humanitarian relief, reconstruction, and mitigation from high-risk areas. The USGS is now supporting major Hurricane Mitch Reconstruction activities.
The objectives of the USGS program are to improve the availability of basic data and information; provide information for improved damage assessment, hazard mitigation, and management of natural resources; develop and distribute base maps, aerial photography, and satellite imagery from affected countries into an integrated, computer-based Geographic Information System (GIS) format; and develop regional strategies for mitigation, preparedness, and response to natural hazards.
USGS Hurricane Mitch Clearinghouse Nodes
A fundamental goal of the Hurricane Mitch clearinghouse nodes is to provide access to digital spatial data through metadata. These nodes are connected to the FGDC Clearinghouse which functions as a detailed catalog service with support for links to spatial data and browse graphics. The USGS Hurricane Mitch Program has nodes in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and the United States.
The Hurricane Mitch Project Nodes are :
The Central American countries (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua) have clearinghouse nodes which house data and the accompanying metadata produced only by that country's agencies in cooperation with the USGS Hurricane Mitch Program. The node at EROS Data Center houses all USGS data and metadata.
