GPS UTILITY - README FILE Versions 1.40.8 (16-bit) and 3.40.8 (32-bit) - 12 September 2000 DESCRIPTION: GPS Utility can be used to manage lists of waypoints, routes and tracks and to transfer this information to and from a Garmin or Magellan GPS receivers. For a full list of functions currently supported read the ‘Contents’ information which is accessed via the ‘Help’ menu. GPS Utility exists as either a 16-bit application or a 32-bit application (with long filename support). It has been tested on Win3.1, Win95/98 and WinNT systems. The serial port has been tested on COM1 and COM2, but the program should also work on COM3, COM4 and COM5. GPS Utility has not been tested on all Garmin or Magellan GPS receivers - if you find one on which it does not work, please let the author know. For Transfer to and from the Garmin receiver, use the GRMN/GRMN mode under the I/O Setup - make sure you set your receiver to this mode. Please send comments, suggestions, bug information etc. to Alan Murphy via E-mail to ‘murphy@enterprise.net’. LIMITATIONS and KNOW PROBLEMS 1. When using a bitmap with the 32-bit version, the bitmaps colour palette needs to contain Red, Blue, Green and Yellow. If you wish to use a greyscale bitmap see the Help system for a current workaround to this problem (use a Topic search for 'Bitmap preparation'). I hope to remove this problem in the next Beta test version. 2. For a list of other minor limitations see the HELP system, see the CONTENTS or search on LIMITATIONS. INSTALLATION The 16-bit version of GPS Utility is packaged as a single ZIP file for manual installation. The 32-bit version of GPS Utility is packaged as either: a) an INSTALLSHEILD installation b) as a single ZIP file for manual installation. Upgrades are packaged in ZIP files for manual installation. INSTALLSHIELD INSTALLATION (32-bit version only) 1. Unzip the file into any temporary directory. 2. Run SETUP.EXE from that directory. 3. Normally select 'Typical' installation if installing for the first time. If you are upgrading and wish to keep your own copies of the Datums file and/or the Symbol Set files, then select 'Custom' setup. 4. GPS Utility will then be installed (default is in C:\Program Files\GPS Utility). 5. Once installed read the README.TXT file in the installation directory. (this file) 6. Delete the files in the temporary directory. 7. If you wish to create an association between a filetype and GPS Utility, see the instructions below. Creating an assocation between the filetype 'GPS' will allow you to start GPS Utility automatically by double clicking on files of that type. The software registration algorithm has been changed. Registered users should have received new registration information. If you are a registered user and have not received this information, please email the author at "murphy@enterprise.net". UNINSTALLING GPS UTILITY If you used the INSTALLSHEILD installation then you can uninstall GPS Utility by going to "Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs". To uninstall manually: Just delete the directory in which you stored GPS Utility and the GPSU.INI file which you will find in your C:\WINDOWS directory. GPS Utility does not have any DLLs or go messing around in the Registry. It is a self contained EXE file with a couple of data files. USAGE NOTES: The initial default settings are: Datum - WGS84 Time Zone - 0 Communication Port - COM1 Degree Symbol - ASCII character 176 Printer Font - Courier (best to use single spaced fonts) Symbol Set - SymSet1 (for GPS12,48 etc.) See the Help information for other possible settings and if you wish to use different defaults then you should select the Options|General or the GPS|Setup menus. In particular you should set the Communication Port and Time Zone to suit your particular situation. The time zone setting for EST is -5 and for Australia is +10. It is suggested that you also use the '^' for the degree symbol as this is easier to type on most keyboards and it is more visually distinct from the " (seconds) symbol. You may also like to set the Printer Font to a better font (for example, 'Courier New' if this is supported on your system). GETTING STARTED Click on 'LEARNING ABOUT' in the 'HELP' menu. This will take you through a mini tutorial. It uses the SAMPLE.TXT file which you can also examine using any standard text editor. For Map Digitizing you can try using the LOBOS.TXT and LOBOS.BMP files. Follow the instructions in 'LEARNING MAP REGISTRATION' which are accessed via the Help Contents menu. You may also like to take a look at the 'THINGS TO DO' with GPS Utility (see the 'CONTENTS' page). ------------------------------------------------------------------- Good GPSing.
